definetely pull all the covers and look around. clean it too. probably would not hurt to replace chain cover gasket. if any leakage at seams it is not "too" hard to break the nose off and reseal. otherwise just get easy gaskets. you could rinse it with an engine cleaner and marvel mystery oil, just crank it by hand with a clutch shaft in a half inch drill use a nut on a stud in oil flinger hole lock a drill on it the fill with a good 10-30 and run for a tankful or so, then go to a final lube. i use amsoil exclusively now in my gearboxes. it is very nice. castrol full synth 75-90 a close second. royal purple lube also works very nice. i think redline MTL a little thin, MTL shock proof is about same as amsoil lube. probable re-badged from same refinery. :)
bottom line. best lube is clean lube. take your choice. every one will offer a different one. :)
