Sounds like the bolt broke on the hole that goes through the metal. It can be kludged using a bigger bolt/nut as some posters have suggested, but the correct fix is to drill out the old bolt using successively larger drill bits (along the way you can try a power bolt extraction device such as a DRILL-OUT/ALDEN CORP, try
http://store.yahoo.com/toolsplus/drlp-250.html, search on extractor.) but if the threads are damaged, as is highly likely, you should helicoil the hole. If you don't know how to do it, now is a good time to learn.
I still say it's a sin to put steel threads in an aluminum hole.
But it's typical in the automotive industry.
