most of the advice I have seen for sealing the rocker cover gasket is to use Loctite 518 in just 3 small areas (shown in Bentley), upper left, distributor hump, and lower left. Silicone gasket makers are apparently bad news, as they can shed fragments that will eventually plug the oil channels. As to whether you need to replace the gasket, it depends on how long it has been in there, and whether it comes apart when you lift off the cover. If it's really bad, you will have to spend a lot of time scraping out the remains of the old gasket in the channel on the cover. You really don't need adhesive, as the new gasket will usually stay in place for the few seconds it needs to when you flip the cover over... search this BB for "valve cover", lots of useful advice...
