Fuel system issues

Ok, a few months ago my 88 900s fuel system died. First the relays and fuel pump fuse in the fusebox melted, so I rewired all those things. Then I checked the fuel pump leads. Scary. The wires were black and brittle, and there was all this white hardened chalky stuff all over the fuel pump. After rewiring the pump and chiseling all the chalky crap off it, I tried to start the car. New battery, turns over great, but doesn't catch. I can hear the fuel pump whirring away, but nothing. Previously, my car would run as I periodically was testing it while rewiring, but the fuel pump wires got hot enough to burn you if you touched them.
after all this work, I know the answer is probably to replace the fuel pump. I have a new replacement waiting, but I'm optimistic (delusional?). And no, I haven't checked to see if it's pumping fuel anymore, which is tonight's rain sodden mission. Thank you for your help.
