Help me back to the C900 world here. I have a 1987 900S 16V that has what I have believed for the past year to be a dead engine. Last summer, I started getting a little bit of blue smoke from the exhaust after idling. I kept driving the car, but it got worse and worse. I had my compression check, and all four cylinders were uniform and had very good compression (I don't remember the exact numbers, but the indie Saab mech I took it to said it was very good). On inspection of the #1 spark plug, I found it to be oil fouled and the car was beginning to burn oil faster and faster. I took it to a mechanic who thought it may be the valve guides, but when he started it up to put it on the lift, he diagnosed the car as "dead". He said it had a bad ring and wasn't worth replacing. I parked the car and bought a 95 900S which is a great little runner, but it's no true Saab. Lately, I have been thinking about the issue and doubting that a bad ring is the problem. I have to admit, I didn't change the oil for, um... a lot of miles, but now that I've learned my lesson I'm wondering; would that neglect cause a SERIOUS problem in one cylinder and no problem in the other cylinders? Also, is it just a coincidence that the ONE cylinder happens to be the one right next to the oil supply for the camshaft? Not only that, but would oil leak past a bad ring with NO drop in compression? Is there hope for my old car? Let's hope so, I miss that laid-back comfy smooth riding ugly old car.
