Had a similar problem with my 1990 900S. Definately check the little
dimmer / rheostat in the instrument cluster as these are prone to get
loose and just spin behind the dash when you are trying to turn it.
See Jeff and Royce's saab site for a neat trick to stop this spinning with a plastic cable tie. The 2 or 3, I forget, little tiny bulbs that light the fan speed control and the heater / vent dials are replaceable after removing the center console /glove box in front of the shifter and removing the lower dash pad. If you haven't tried this before allow a couple of hours. The bulbs are removeable with a bit of cursing and either small hands or careful use of long needle nose pliers. I found that pushing the A/C switch, Hazard Switch, Rear Defroster Switch etc forward out of the dash made this space much easier to see into and more importantly easier to reach into to work.
The new glass bulbs just push into place. Then you get to put it all back together. This is actually a good time to check the heater control valve for leaks since you've got most of that nastly little jobs removal sequence already done. Good Luck. It is nice to have those
lights back on when your looking for the controls at night.
