In addition to what Alex said, another possibility is the shift rod bushing at the front of the shifter box. I had that tear & work out of position, doing pretty much what you describe. It also makes the 1-2 gate pretty sloppy.
The shift lever is mounted into a box in the console. The forward end of that box is a couple inches forward of the lever, and a shift rod goes out towards the transmission. The bushing where this rod goes thru the 'box' has to hold the rod in place. When you move the lever side-to-side in neutral, the shift rod is supposed to twist. With a sloppy bushing the shift rod just moves side-to-side instead of twisting.
