By the way you describe the odor of the exhaust, it might be running a little lean. The a/f mixture is controlled by the lambda control unit. IIRC, there is a slight adjustment that can be made for the a/f mixture, but they could have adjusted the timing also. My advice is to leave what works fine alone. You could try using higher octane fuel to get somewhat better performance (it's sort a funny using the word performance when discussing the 8valve n/a engine!) and you'll prevent engine knock from occurring.
