transmission coupler coming loose?

today I backed up from a parking spot and then shifted into 1st. Strangely when I let off the clutch and gave gas I moved backwards - I was still in reverse. I played around with the stick and then eventaully got the car into 3rd or fourth and drove out onto the street. I quickly decided that I wasn't going to drive home in fifth (and burn out the new clutch) and instead had AAA take me home (yes that's twice in four days). While waiting for the truck I decided that the mechanic would be better than lying out on the snow covered driveway. It was infact the shift coupler clap that has loosened.
Has this ever happened to anyone else?
Almost took the car to "Alexander's Imported car service", 4 short blocks from my house - when they scoffed at me describing it as "an easy job - I just don't want to lie on the side of the road" I tried calling Jerry at FAS and this time got through. Anyone ever been to Alexander's? There's lots of Merc's, Audi's, and volvos out in front whenever I go by.
Also had the aquatread3's mounted today. $95 for mounting/balancing/disposing 4 tires seems the going rate in a metro area. Freeway bumps seem less harsh now with the new tires - I can tell though that I also need shocks - some of the bumps in the road come through the seat. That said, I feel more safe with the new BJ's installed. That "clunk" at every asphault imprefection was really disconcerting.
