That threads on to the gas tank and holds the fuel pump down. These can be a real bitch to get off. I have done this job before and wound up trashing that ring. Saab makes a special tool for removing it (it's shown in the Bentley manual), and it looks as though that would make the job much easier. If you're not up to the job yourself, I would suggest bringing the car to a Saab indie that has this tool.
2 more things:
A. I have found that removing the fuel level sender before the pump minimizes the chance that it (the fuel level sender) gets broken (ask me how I know).
B. The proper orientation of the pump is necessary upon reinstallation. A Saab indie will know this, but an unfamiliar mechanic may not.
