leak from intake to head?

I have replaced the head on my kids 16v 900T (88, 193k) due to excessive warpage after the head gasket went. Got a head from a 90 900T (in good shape), had valve seals done and light surfacing (and compression is good, btw). Car now runs fine BUT.. one problem I cannot solve. It "hoots"! It appears to have an air leak between the intake manifold and the head, at least from what I can tell. I torqued it properly (yes, new intake gasket, TWICE) and used Hylomar to help seal it. To no avail... so I tightened up AGAIN and it seemed to help just a tiny bit, based on noise level, which is pretty high. I even smeared a little gasket sealant around part of the intake, but that did not change things.

Now I do not dare tighten it anymore. A friend suggested that I remove the intake and have it surfaced, and try it all again. Does this sound plausible? Seems odd to me that the intake could be warped, or is it just the mismatch due to changed head? Either way, it appears to be the cultprit behind poor idle and other driveability issues that will not go away. It is my last resort too, as all is new... water pump, a few hoses, injector seals, etc...

Anyone ever had this?
