Just as preventative maintenance, remove the ring connectors from the battery and sand the the inner contact points; then sand the terminals on the battery and coat with dialectic grease. Re-attach the rings and tighten.
My '86 that I recently bought would not start - I thought it was the voltage regulator and/or battery...turns out it was just corroded connections that were loose.
Car had not run in 3 weeks and started right up!
