ABS accumulator is failing. Aka, the bomb. It's a round Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: antilock and braking light come on when applying brake, Chris, Tue, 11 Nov 2003 20:53:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
black container inside engine compartment, right where the brake fluid reservoir sits.
It have two chambers where the top one is pre filled with nitrogen to a pressure of 1218 Psi.
The ABS hydraulic pump pumps up the pressure in the lower chamber to meet the prefilled pressure. This way you have a steady supply of brake boost/help when braking.
The Nitrogen slowly leaks out of the upper chamber with age and use and reach the point where it is now on your car. Next step will be that you are gonna loose brake power and the car will act like a car without brake boost (and even worse).
Count on about $450.00 parts and labor to have it replaced.
If you are fairly good with tools, you can do it yourself. But it is kind of messy with the brake fluid pouring out and it is important to bleed off the residual pressure by pumping the brake pedal (with key off) several times before removing the accumulator.
