Bad directional switch

Doesn't stay in place to hold the blinker on...sound familiar? Or,doesn't cancel? I just fixed this problem on a new purchase, and thought I'd pass this along. I have had this quite a few times on older 99's, and although the cruise contol stuff has been added, the switch has remained the same.I took apart one of these swiches years ago to see what goes bad on them, only to find they simply need some lubing in most cases. It sounds completely backwards, you would think oiling the directional switch would make it even less likely to hold it's position, or even never hold it after oiling it. Not true!! Inside the switch there are little contact springs that snap in and out to hold the blinker on and also cancel, like little contacts in a relay.These springs are simply sticking closed. Simply remove the switch mounts(no need to unplug it), and lightly oil the unit whlile moving it through its motions. Don't forget to move the high beam part back and forth as well. Since I've realized how these switches are designed, I've only had to replace one with a worn central cam. I oil all my switches, and my turn signals "snap" real sharply and perform flawlessly.
