John, I have two, a '92 and '93. I'd check the antifreeze to look for any contamination (a la head gasket) and I'd change the gearbox oil to redline. Try out all gears and listen for any whine. The '92 had the improved pinon bearing in the 5 speed, so you should be okay but it shifts much smoother with the synthetic, especially in the cold.
As with any Saab ask for proof of maintenance.
Oh, one more thing, makes sure that the radiator fan comes on when the needle reaches a bit over 1/2 way mark. If not, it might well have overheated (a la warped head)
They are a WONDERFUL ride. I put bilsteins in my '92 with poly bushings and it handles like a dream. I liked the '92 so much I recently bought a '93 with 34,000 miles on it. Best cars I ever owned. Look for the maintenance and those two items I mentioned and you will own a good car.
