>My wife's '87 SPG is all of a sudden hard to shift into 3rd and 4th.The stick also feels loose.

All of a sudden, like she finally told you about it and you noticed now, after not driving it yourself for a year+?

I had the same problem on my '86 900S. I was convinced that the tranny was finally wearing out after 200K+ miles.
My mechanic told me that the shifter was severely worn. He convinced me of it by pointing out that you no longer had to pull up on the stick colalr to shift into reverse.
I had it rebuilt (for a total of US$113, including brazing in a new bushing for the clutch pedal hinge), and I was amazed at how all the sloppiness that had built up unnnoticed over the years went away. It's now 310K miles, and the tranny and rebuilt shifter are still tight.

PS:
My mechanic didn't do it, he recommended me to a (SURPRISE!) local AANCO shop. Being skeptical about AAMCO, I was reluctant; he reassured me that it was a locally owned shop, not a franchise (per se), and the guy stood by his work. I have to say that he did an excellent job, including the bushing in the clutch pedal, which he pointed out was just as worn as the shifter, worn to the point of about 1/4 inch travel at the hinge everytime you stepped on the clutch. The wear in the hinge had built up so slowly, just like the tranny sloppiness, that I hadn't even noticed it until he pointed it out. The wear in the hinge was obvious once he pointed out the clicking noise of the pedal hinge shaft shifting in the sleeve bearing everytime you stepped on the clutch. DOH!
Anyways, US$113 took care of both problems.
