you can replace the window, or fix the grid.
The actual grid is composed of metallic "conductive" paint on the glass, and there is a "repair kit" from permatex with a thimble-sized bottle of paint and a matchstick-sized brush.
Look closely at the window, and see if you can find a scratch running through all of the defrost grid lines except for the one that works. Little dabs of touch-up paint will fix you up.
In my case, I used acetone to remove the large amount of sticker residue all over the inside of the back window when I first got my car. This was how I learned that the grid was made of paint. Instead of trying to paint an entire new defrost grid on my window, I swapped the window with a spare. The procedure was tricky, but is possible for one person working alone with no prior experience- I'm living proof. I think it took ~half an afternoon.
