Each winter I go to a friend's cabin in VT. The cabin is 3/4 mi down a flat wide snowmobile trail from the plowed road. The snowmobiles compact the surface so well that I can drive my 1991 900 on it no problem.
The problem is parking.
What I do is shovel out a parking spot next to the trail in the 3feet deep of snow, right down to almost the bare earth. Then I park. Backing it in is hard, going head first would be much easier. Getting out of the parking spot requires climbing over the 16" - 24" lip/hump between the hard packed surface of the trail and the parking spot. I tried chains on the front tires, and coming out the spot front first (no running room possible save 2 feet maybe) but that didn't work. The chains tried to grab the hardpack trail surface, but just broke it up on the edge being climbed resulting in a hung up front end on the snow. Creating a snow ramp does little to help given the weight of the car and the spinning of the tires. The solution was 4 guys pushing from behind and I got out of the spot no problem. Obviously, I don't want to depend on finding 4 big guys next time. So I am considering using a winch.
The final question is: What lbs capasity hand winch can pull my car (aprox 3200 lbs), out of this "hole" or over this "lip", ass first (b/c going in head first is easier), and do the job in 4-6 seconds (only needs to travel 15 feet or less)?
It has to be done fast, b/c the trail has snowmobiles coming often and it would be unsafe obviously to have a cable accross the trail.....
and no, I'm not buying a 4x4 jeep! LOL
