Alternator pivot bolt hell. Please help! Posted by Devin [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Hi All,
Belts were squeaking abnormally on my 92T this afternoon. I popped the hood and found the pivot bolt banging against the firewall and the alternator cocked 20 degrees or so from where it should be. The belts are still intact and spinning! The alternator is just banging around in there. Doesn't look like the tensioner bolt is holding it at all.
But there's too much tension from the belts to let me center the alternator and thread the bolt back through. Also, I can't reach the bolt enough to turn it much. Is there a better way to do it than with a box-end wrench? Please be specific here. I'm thoroughly confused.
I assume there's a nut somewhere on I95 South that's supposed to be holding the bolt to the alternator. I know this only because I found a washer. What's the size of the nut? Maybe I can try to get a new one in Delaware on a Sunday somewhere.
Here's a side note:
I drove the car 100 miles last night with no problems. I spent the morning putting an alternator in my friend's GM van. Coincidence? I was feeling pretty good about my abilities. It took 1/2 hour tops, including the serpentine belt! We joked the whole time about being glad we didn't have to do this stuff to our Saabs (he's got an SPG). Then 20 minutes later my car had a sympathetic reaction. Ugh.
Thanks,
Devin
