There's an adjustable pin on the bottom of the shifter that is supposed to limit the shifter right hand travel so you can slide right into 5th. When it's properly adjusted, you have to pull up on the collar on the top of the shifter boot to go into reverse.
When it's not properly adjusted or the plastic guide block in the shifter assembly is worn, you lose the 5th gear "indexing".
There's also the case where the shifter just needs centering adjustment. That's a relatively straightforward project, if a bit on the greasy side.
Are you a DIYer? We can walk you through just about any project and refer you to good reference websites.
