Has anyone modified their 2.1 intake?

Any performance items for my 93 900s seem rare to non existant. Aside from drop springs and the odd ignition upgrade i am having a difficult time bastardizing my newly aquired toy. Although quite impressed was i to notice stock Hella headlights and VDO gauges, even a decent rim upgrade is a task and a half. Luckily, i run an auto parts department so i have access to all sorts of information and products. I have managed to piece together a near-full Accel ignition upgrade, borrowing from Honda and some universal elements. Problem is, i want to install it at the same time as my intake and exhaust modifications. Not helping the matter is that K&N does not make a stock air cleaner replacement, nor do they or any other company make a cold air induction kit. A universal K&N round filter would do, but i would much rather have a cold air setup. I took my stock cleaner assembly apart and noticed that the air box is engineered quite well as far as air flow, but what my question comes down to is the mass air flow sensor. It is located right at the end of the intake hose and i am wondering if the locaton is the reason a cold air kit is not available, and what effect installing a cone filter in place of the stock air box will have. I would appreciate any and all input anybody out there has.
Thanx.
