Others can probably do better but...
Pick some arbitrary speed that's above the typical midpoint for a given gear, say second, like 35 mph. Drive it and note the rpms carefully. Now drive 35 in 3rd and note the rpms. Then put the car in neutral and release the clutch and (without depressing the clutch) rev the engine well above the rpms that you noted in 2nd. As the engine falls back to idle, at the moment that the rpms equals the previously observed value, the car can be shifted w/o using the clutch. In reality, though you have slowed slightly while doing this which means the rpms noted aren't exactly appropriate for the situtation anymore. But now when you depress the clutch and select the lower gear, the synchronizer is only working to equalize an rpm differnce of a couple of hundred instead of >1000. Much less wear and better results, in particular from 3rd to second. You will feel the difference in the effort to select the gear. If you hit it perfectly, it just falls into engagement with no resistance at all.
