additive. The only bad gas I've ever bought has been on the freeway in some godforsaken exit in NJ where the SOB has to pump the gas for you. I'd be very surprised that one container of oil additive poisoned the well, so to speak, especially when diluted in 16 gallons of fuel or more!
Some old cars can burn up more oil (and additive) than this in a few tanks....
That's not to say the cat didn't die...I would expect an 87 cat to die in 250K miles or so...nothing lasts forever and they were only guaranteed for 50K anyway! It continues to surprise me that everyone expects them to last well beyond 100K...and even more that they do. Heck, I've got a volvo turbo with over 265K on it and still has the OEM cat. OTOH, I just replaced the OEM saab cat on my 87 900T around 250K miles...
