Shifting trouble, bad manual trans?

Help! I have reviewed several posts regarding shifting and tried several solutions. I need more input. Here is the problem. My manual transmission has trouble shifting into first. You have to put it in second and then first, and have to put it in gear before coming to a stop. If you force the shifter into first while sitting still, it is very difficult to get out of first. Sometimes it will get stuck in a slot and only shift into first or second. You have to shake and slide the shifter until you feel it come free. The problem will go away after being driven for a week or so, but if I let someone else drive it the problem returns. All other gears work fine.
Here is what I have done. Replace pilot bearing. Aligned shifter per Bently. Check shift linkage. Drained and refilled trans fluid (3 times). Replaced slave and master cylinders, clutch feels fine.
Is the transmission shot? I can drive the car fine because I am used to it, but other people have trouble. Any input/suggestions is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
