A year ago I upgraded my 82 solid rotors to 87 vented. To do so I needed the entire spindle assembly, along with the calipers from the 87. The old 82 axles fit in the 87 wheel assembly without a hitch. Only problem was that the tripod bearings were riding along the extreme outer edge of the inner driver cup bearing surface, meaning either the axles or the inner drivers were a mismatch in terms of length. Solution was to replace the older axle with new, which meant also replacing the older inner drivers with the 87 model inner drivers because the spider bearing and i.d. cup are larger.

This weekend was the perfect time to make the change. When I pulled the 82 inner drivers and compared with the 87, the length difference was obvious, with the 87 being longer by 14 mm or so on the wheel side of the unit. Everything else was the same, most importantly the tranny side i.d. stub axle length and circumference. No need to mess with shims, bearing pre-load or ring gear backlash adjustments. It slid right into the differential without a hitch. With everything back in place after the 5 hour job, when I first started the engine there was a horrible noise - a rattle and serious vibration during both idling and while driving. It was awful. I imagined the worst case scenario where somehow I damaged the tranny. But how? OK, there was that one moment when the passenger side inner driver wouldn't bolt up snug because the plunger pin had fallen loose before butting up against it's stop point within the differential ring gear and instead was propped up vertically in that slot. But I was able to retrieve it with a magnetic tool and all went back in place mistake free from that point on. I went to bed thinking the worst and believing I'd have to pull the entire front end again and put the old axles and i.d.'s back on.

But when I first started the car up the following morning to position it for the day long chore, I listened carefully to the sound and thought it was very familiar, like I'd heard it before, similar to a dead engine mount or an exhaust system alignment problem. Sure enough, one look beneath revealed that the catalytic convertor had shifted and was resting against the heat shield. All I had to do was loosen the exhaust downpipe from the turbo elbow, plus undo the tranny bracket clamp, then reposition and retighten. No more noise. Whew! I was thereafter in such a good mood that I spent the rest of the day tending to other dirty chores such as the shift rod coupling adjustment, lengthening the stick shift end tip, rewiring and soldering, cleaning the battery rest shelf. The new axles and i.d.'s are a good fit. I did reverse the right to left side i.d.s (by removal of the stub axle/bearing cups) because of slight bearing surface wear, with no excessive vibration to speak of during acceleration.

I had a huge celebration dinner that night while watching ESPN football. I also told a woman friend about my two days spent under my car getting dirty and she found it sexy. It's all about the girls.
