Beautiful cars! BUT:
I have to agree w Dave & Melroe; unless you're the sort that can mentally visualize, tear down/reassemble the twin cam 16 valve head while listening to the kids play "Grand Theft Auto" you will drive your self crazy. And a big bank acct helps.
I currently have & support an '89 VDP and a '99 XJ8 as well as my '90 SPG. the SAAB is by far the easiest to work on and much more reliable. The jury is still out on the '99; still too new and much better quality.
The '89 VDP however.......
just a few examples:
signal light "bulb failure module", one in each corner, lets you know there is a light out. Very fussy on which brand of bulb you use, is noted for cold solder joints from the factory, contains 4 relays, 3 transistors, a bunch of caps and resistors, and 3 connectors. (I pulled them all & resoldered every connection on the 2 boards in each unit), $479 US
Cabin fans: 2 of them, buried under the dash, relays, diodes & a transister in the air flow path, also noted for filling up w water if you neglect the air intake drain. Takes me 3 hours each to R&R not including the time to rebuild the electronics inside. $535 each US
Self leveling rear suspension; uses the same hydraulics as the power assist for the brakes. requires HSMO oil, only avail from the dealer, the entire system is basicly hydraulic shocks that compensate for the ride height, valves leak $375, sensor dies $189, shock leak $637. Removed the whole D*** system & replaced w beefier springs & Konis.
"Linear switch" in the shifter, lets you know what gear you're in (auto trans) special tool required to position the thing properly, contains 18 membrane switches, a B**** w/o the tool. dies.... $597
one last thing; surgically insert another joint in your forearm to get at some of the things you will have to get to.
