Don't want to jinx anything, but after reading all the posts I could find about switching out the coolant for MB or some other G05, and hearing mixed opinions about Dexcool, I bit the bullet and tried the Dexcool. I flushed as completely and repeatedly as possible. I used distilled water with the Dexcool and after 7K miles, no leaks anywhere, no busted seals, no leaky pump, no coolant loss at all. The water pump was a bit noisy before the change and is now more quiet (once warm). More importantly, the Dexcool seems to dissipate the heat better than before; meaning the temp does not rise nearly as fast at stoplights in heat (even in the summer). Much more stable.
Since I have the 2.1L NA engine which was built with the wrong headgasket, and I have no idea whether the original is still in there (bought her at 74K miles), I am doing all I can to keep her cool and corrosion free. Since 95% of my driving is on the highway, I'll change again in two years. As for now, I couldn't be happier with the way she's running.
Still looking for a lower temp fan switch to replace the OEM 92C switch. I changed the thermostat to a Saab 82C when I winterized last fall. There was a reference from someone to contact eEuroparts for an 87C switch, but they say they can't get it anymore. Other solutions?
