Chris,
I'm a Saab rookie, old hand with Volvo 122, willingly defer to more qualified Saab hand on this. I do have a score to settle with monroe.
American-ride type shocks have stiff compression stroke/ loose and quick expansion. Foreign shocks are opposite. Monroe shocks quickly destroyed the rubber bushings in my volvo 122. They supply a dimensional but not design fit.
Had a look under my 900S recently. Rear shocks' cylinders are chatter- marked as if the (outer) shroud is buckling against the (inner) cylinder.
And the exposed paint looks like good-ol' Monroe blue. Suggests to me that the cockeyed monroe action is stressing bushings somewhere if not everywhere , causing the buckling action.
I'll be watching to see what advice you get on brands. Meanwhile, am thinking of ?????? that Japanese make? Be aware that Bilstein and Koni might make 2 or 3 models of shock per your style application.
good luck
