To get it aligned the RIGHT way, it goes something like this...
Lift the front end so it doesn't scrub your tires away. Turn full-lock in both directions, the steering wheel needs to stop at the same opposing angle in both directions. If not, take off the steering wheel & make it so. No, you don't lay down on the floor. That spline joint down at the rack can only be put together one way.
Then lower the car & do the alignment. After the toe is adjusted, if the wheel doesn't center you DON'T re-center the steering wheel! You shorten one tie rod & lengthen the other by the same amount.
Just to turn this into a real long boring read, here's why... The rack itself is the only thing preventing you from steering 'too far' in one direction or the other. If it's off far enough, you can screw up ball joints, or even pull a brake hose apart.
