If the slave goes, you'll usually see leakage coming out of the hole in the bottom of the tranny below the clutch. If the master goes, you may get some leakage out of the end of the cylinder onto the passenger side of the firewall, but it is more common that it doesn't leak.
You can replace the master without replacing the slave IMO (provided the slave is OK), but the risk is getting crud from the failed master into the slave cylinder while bleeding the system. That will lead to failure of the slave. Bleeding the system by injecting clean fluid into the system at the bleed nipple on the slave avoids that problem and also does a better job of expelling air.
Given that replacing the master and slave cylinders are separate and largely unrelated operations, you might consider replacing the master first (it's more likely to be shot and easier). If that fixes the problem, don't bother with the slave. Replacing the slave is a more involved operation because it requires removal of the clutch.
Be sure to carefully inspect the rubber part of the hydraulic line leading to the slave cylinder. If it's starting to bulge, it could produce the symptom you describe.
While you're at it, it would probably be a good idea to replace the hydraulic fluid in the brake system. Failure of the clutch hydraulics is commonly the result of old contaminated hydraulic fluid in the system.
