Follow the link to see what I've been doing in my '90. I'll probably drain it again this coming summer just to see if any more crud comes out.
I recently picked up an '85 8v for my son, & it's always had 10W-30 in it (150k mi on it now). I just started the same clean-out process, & I'm planning on using Rotella T Syn 5W-40 when it's done. This is a Group III synthetic, with a slightly different additive package than standard (gasoline engine) 10W-30. I feel the extra additives & slightly higher viscosity will protect things (like pinion bearings) better, & I know it will stand up better than any gear oil with the heat Saab trannies are subjected to.
If I lived in an area that had warmer winters, I'd probably use only Mobil's Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40 since it has just a bit of moly added to it. But with the D1300 in my '90, shifting's a little stiff when ambient temps drop below 30°F. Once the engine heats up the tranny though, shifting's fantastic!
