Since no responses, I'll take a crack at your problem. Not definitive, but what I would do. Good luck.
Step 1: clean all grounds to "shiny bright." Radiator lower crossmember, trans bolt, battery connectors, Alternator short black ground wire, two ground bundles near injectors(keep these wires where they were). Check any wires for corrosion/breaks within a few inches of connectors. Then see if you've fixed the problem.
Step 2:
Check fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vacuum/pressure hose that goes to it from the throttle body and suck blow on the hose. If you get gasolene dripping out of it, obviously don't suck on it!! If any gas or the FPR does not hold vacuum or pressure, replace FPR. Easy repair, and if you do it, replace poor OEM hose clamp with a proper screw type clamp.
Step 3:
Check ECU and relays for fuel pump and main system(located just above ECU). To get to all this you should drop the knee bolster and remove the door plate so that you can peel back the carpet on the passenger side right fender kick panel. Off the top of my head, I don't know all the ECU terminal test specs, but you might find them in the townsendimports.com tech documents or through a bb search. Bentley Manual has the info, too. Anyway before you go through the whole sequence pull the relays and pry off the covers to check condition of contacts. These get burned and replacement might fix the problem. Finally, the ECU on 89 900's is known for problems. If you have ever jump started the car without loading the electrical system prior to jumper disconnect, then you may have damaged the ECU. Or it could jsut have failed on its own.
