adding clarion equalizer

Found an old equlizer and fortunately pulled out the wiring harness. While I tried to figure out the proper connection... i eventually got it. Unfortunately I was not able to put in my radio code. Does adding an equalizer effect the code of the radio? Just wondering. I now wonder whether the equalizer will work after trying all combinations of connectors together. I knew the first one was wrong when I smelled the electronics heating up. Ooops. If you are knowledgeable on the first question, can you tell me if you can fry the equalizer by trying all combos of connections?
Thanks.
