in my '02 Chevy Impala two days ago. Don't have one in my Saab convertible (yet). The remote starter is awesome. I traveled for business for two nights this week in the snowy Cleveland weather and now that I have the remote starter I don't know how I lived without it.
I am very experienced with electronics (15 years) but in the end I decided to let the job be done by a professional shop I am familiar with. Although I know I could have bought a cheap system on Ebay and installed it myself, there were a number of safety precautions I would not have thought of that the shop did think of. Also, I bought a major name brand system and the first thing in the manual, and I suspect most companies feel the same way, was that if this was not installed by an authorized dealer there was absolutely no factory warranty coverage.
I had a unit installed that in addition to remote start from a keychain fob also has a controller in the car for remote start based on ambient temperature (high or low) and / or based on a specific time of day (up to 4 times per day) based on a once and done program or a weekly schedule. I paid a discounted rate because of knowing someone who works there but the street price for this system would be about $385-$400 installed the way I got it.
Since the system also controls the power locks it takes knowledge of the specific vehicle and whether the locks take a contact closure signal, a 12 volt signal or some other type. In my case, my Impala takes a 12 volt signal through a specific value resitor to lock the locks and a contact to chassis ground to unlock. And you NEED the locks tied in...I never thought about this but when you remote start the car you need the ability to unlock the doors...also the system I got functions as a security idle system...in other words I can engage the system while my car is running normally from the key, then take the key out and lock the doors. If anyone breaks in and tries to drive it the engine will shut off.
Incidentally, they did not tap into the ignition switch itself but rather into OEM harnesses located under my dash.
The good installers can of course integrate this with a security system for more money. If by some chance you happen to be located in Northeast Ohio I'll give you the name of the shop I used. Best of luck.
