I did that last weekend/yesterday. Removing the hood is the only way to go. If anything it will save you a ton of back aching. I found it's very easy to remove the hood. A lot easier then I once thought 2 bolts and the windshield hose and it's off. I'm a big guy so I could do it by myself. but would rather have someone help. The first time I did it my wife (100 pounds wet) helped me remove it.
Plus there are a couple nuts and bolds that hold the radiator in that might be in the way of the hood. You'll have to take out the Intercooler and pipes, the coil, and maybe the fan. My 85 900t, I had to take the left fan off first. but I didn't have to putting it back in. go figure. It also helped me to take the dis. cap off too. Just for the room to work in. I'd hate to bend a bunch of fins because I was in too big a hurry to slide it in.
