I’ve owned 3, 5-spd C900s over the past 10 years. An 84 4-door turbo, an 88 3-door turbo and a 94 turbo convertible. I still have the 94 convertible, but don’t drive it in the winter any more because I just got a 2000 9-5 wagon 5-spd. All the 900s ran Michelin MXV4+ and they were fairly good in the snow. I did have Gislaved snow tires on the 84 & 88 when I was in college in upstate New York and they certainly helped. Now I live in southcoastal MA, and snow tires really aren’t necessary. Last winter and this year to date, we’ve had quite a bit of snow here. Last winter I was driving the convertible and it handled like a champ and rarely did the ABS come on when stopping. Actually, I think it was the best of the 900s in snow. This year with the 9-5 and the same Michelin MXV4+ (just a few months old), I’ve gotten stuck in my driveway twice, requiring an hour of shoveling each time to extricate the car. When driving on the road, TCS comes on a lot and ABS engages at nearly every stop. My driving technique hasn’t changed, but I must say that I don’t think the 9-5 is as good in the snow. I find myself turning the TCS off. Maybe I’ll have to get snow tires for it. I can now confidently say that I’m glad for not buying a Gary Fisher edition or Aero model with really big tires!
