I'm sure others have had more experience, but I have seen 900s where there was a faint whine in 5th that never seemed to get worse or cause any problems. Having said that, unfortunately most of these cars seem to be like my '86 900S which started out with a faint whine that got progressively worse until 6 months later the transmission started popping out of second and then lost 5th entirely. Since the car was in good condition and worth keeping I had a rebuilt tranny installed. The sad fact is that the transmissions on these cars are nowhere near as durable as the rest of the vehicle, and they are expensive (in the area of $2000) to repair.

All I can suggest is keep an eye (or ear) on it, and change the oil frequently. There is a lot of debate on this last point regarding what oil to use. FWIW since my transmission was installed I've been using Catrol GTX 10W30, changed several times a year.

If it starts getting louder and you want to keep the car you should not wait for serious symptoms to arise before doing something about it. By the time you start losing gears there is serious and costly internal damage.
