Petroleum jelly on rubber bushings?

Reading through the bentley last night to try and figure out some of the procedures required to do suspension upgrades and in a lot of cases, the Bentley manual is describing putting petroleum jelly on new rubber bushings before pressing them into suspension components. This seems odd to me and I have always been told that rubber and oil base products will wear bushings prematurely, hence the use of poly bushings. Has anyone ever used the petroleum jelly suggested? any premature failure? I realize that I shouldn't believe everything I read, but the bently manual has proved to be faily reliable. thanks in advance
