I was getting about .5 volt steady, no variation. When I finally pulled the old sensor it had a distinct rattle from loose or broken internal parts. (It was not all that old, was installed about 2 years and 22,000 miles ago.) By the way, Advance Auto Parts sells an offset O2 sensor socket that is just the ticket for getting the old sensor out.
I put in a generic 3-wire Bosch replacement from sobstory.com and now the voltage is happily fluctuating above and below the .5 volt mark. It looks pretty good, so I'm not going to mess around with the AMM adjustment unless the car still fails emissions when it's retested. (Current AMM setting is 390 ohms.)
