When rebuilding the turbo on our 85, I first went the rebuilt cartridge route, hoping to reuse the cast housing. Once I got the turbo out, I found that there were several cracks in the housing. One crack had split/swelled to the point of interfering with the impeller. So I then had to mail back the cartridge and wait for the replacement rebuilt turbo.
These housing cracks are very common and some can be ignored. I would first pull the old turbo and carefully inspect the inside of the housing for any cracks that show a polished surface from impeller contact. If none, then you can either buy the rebuild kit or a cartridge unit. If bad, go for the whole rebuilt turbo. I got mine from Turbocity in CA and the customer service was very good, prices seemed OK, too. Don't forget to replace the oil feed tube that goes under the intake runners. The coke that builds up inside this line will be dislodged during the turbo r/r and can quickly destroy the new turbo bearings.
