I fixed my shift ball with a new one a month ago after experiencing the floppy-lever syndrome on my new-to-me '86 900s. I fixed some stuff and gave it to my BMW mechanic to fix. Mistake 1. He is a good friend, but the leanring curve was awful steep and I got killed with labor charges ($1400 for slave, master, flush/bleed brakes, PS hose, and rebuilt axle that still makes noise. sigh.)

Anyway, his tech worked on the car. They had it for about 2 weeks. I got the car back and noticed the shifter was fine in the middle of the gate (i.e. not in gear) but when I moved to any gear it started to flop.

Now, as I was picking the car up the mechanic said "you know, you have to have this in reverse to start it." That meant nothing to me then, but now I think he basically man-handled it not knowing how to get it out of reverse until he finally figured it out. And probably broke part of the new shift ball in the process.

What do you guys think? Does that sound consistent with someone trying to force it out of reverse without doing it correctly? It worked fine after I fixed it the first time. The guy who owns the shop is a pal so I want to be smooth about it, but I also don't want to pay for another shift ball because some moron didn't know how to work it.

Also, assuming this axle takes a dump on me (I paid $60 for a rebuild kit and 3 hours of labor to get something a little less noisy :/) what should I pay at a ____SAAB___ independent mechanic to get it RRd and/or replaced?

Other than these issues, the car is running just fine and I like it.
