Tachometer indication when cold

The tachometer on my 1986 900 works until the air temperature is at 0 degrees celsius and below. After allowing the engine to run for a few minutes, shutting it down and restarting again, the tachometer indicates normally. Is there a temperature sensor failure which could cause this problem?
