I'm having (apparently) unique cold start problems with my '88 900S (16V, 318k!). Symptoms:

If outdoor temp is <30 degrees F won't start if car solid cold (>6 hrs after parking and shut down)

Always restarts on attempts made within 4-6 hrs of reaching op temp

When I push the (cold) non-starting car into my heated garage, starts when warmed (time frame undefined, usually overnight)

When cranking the bitc#, er, beauty, in cold it gives promise on first crank, but you have to catch the accelerator JUST right to sustain and start. Failing that, engine will turn over without a hint of firing almost until battery fails; odd thing is that the only other time that the car fires (a blurp, not a start) is just before the battery gives out for that session. Gassy smell when it doesn't start, checked and fuel is getting to carb.

After battery is drained, and I call AAA, and I wait 30 minutes, and the tow truck has not yet arrived... TWICE I have thought, well, let's try it one more time.... Turn the key, and it STARTS!

Car runs great upon starting-- doesn't idle poorly or bog down on acceleration as you might expect from cold start valve problem.

New starter, new battery; good spark on inspection.

Took it to a local mechanic shop (Foreign Car Specialists, or so the sign said), mech guessed that the coolant sensor temp was bad, replaced and billed me $150. No help, no refund.

Cold car stalled in driveway at 20 degrees F. Swapped air mass meter with boneyard salvage, no help. Pushed car into heated garage, started in the morning.

I'm dying here, and if I don't figure this out my better half will make me drive her Grand Am, so PLEASE HELP! I need a tech savvy Saab mech in Madison area who is willing to meter the candidate bad parts and/or info on where to test on my own.

Sorry this is so long, hope someone in Saab-land can help.
