I'm pretty sure that the shift rod is solid between the lower shifter ball and the shift coupler.
A couple of things come to mind ...
Pull the shifter and see if the bottom nylon ball has deteriorated.
Get underneath and watch the rubber coupler when somebody is going through the gears. If you don't mind the grease, hold onto the the shift coupler and the rod that goes into it from the shifter and see if they both turn the same amount. It's possible (but not entirely likely) that the pinch bolt on the back of the coupler is loose.
I'd still bet that the coupler isn't as tight as you think it is. Given the amount of oil that spits around down there, it's a prime candidate for rubber deterioration.
