IIRC the battery gozinta the holder with the terminals closest to the manifold as opposed to closest to the fender. This has worked on my 84 and 87 900 turbos...
The pos cable is generally the red one...the neg cable won't go on the pos (larger terminal) unless you've stretched it out.
Normally when you install a battery you hook up the pos cable first so it's possible to put it on the negative post if the cables are moved around but again, if the battery is put in correctly and stock cables are just hanging there, the pos cable is on the left (it's also long enough to go under the battery box and over/up to the left side of the battery) whereas the negative cable has a smaller/tighter clamp and won't go on the big pos terminal.
Also the neg terminal goes to ground, not the starter.
