i guess the only fair comparison is the more available 16 valve models. with that in mind, the pistons are discontinued by Mahle, the wiring is an absolute spiders web when you throw in the CIS junk, the turbo is not water cooled, and they are the pits for city driving. they did have APC so were better in that sense over '82-down models. They eat up highways, tho...
and yes they are known for cracking heads if overheated. There is probably a shortage of heads considering the age .
