Several of you were kind enough to listen to my .wav file of my transmission whine on my 88 900tc. as the opinion was as suspected that it sounded like the pinion bearing, I brought it in to be checked.

I got the call that it's the differential as it was making the sound in all gears. I mentioned the pinion bearing and was told it may well not be great, but as the diff and the trans are one unit, a rebuild would be addressing both. the rebuild from Saab was $1,600 with the labor about $950. this is in line with what I've gathered from the board on Eriksson rebuilds (which this may well be) and the labor involved.

he asked if I thought it was worth doing, which is a good question. I was prepared for this amount, and do like the car (original owner). he did say the engine leaked a little, and the timing chain was making some noise, but didn't think they had to be addressed at this point. cosmetically, the car is very clean.
