This can happen when something is spilled or comes loose from your cupholder (thighs) - a soda for example. Try squirting some WD40 down in there and gently start working the key back and forth followed by some compressed air, and it should loosen up. It's also possible your key is too worn down. On a somewhat funny sidenote: This happened to me once in the parking lot of a supermarket late at night. After a few minutes I realized my key opened someone else's identical Saab but would not start it - pretty embarrassing...
