This is the Townsend Imports website. It's a very respected source of Saab tech info. After having read this and coupled with my own experiences, I tend to think that 10w30 is the way to go, but draw your own conclusions. My reasoning behind this stems from 900's I have owned (except for one)that have been scrapped due to trans failures which seemed to occur shortly after changing the gearbox oil from 10w30 to a synth (i.e. Redline MTL or Honda MTF). Some people swear by these products (I used to think that Honda MTF was the best thing since sliced bread), and while I agree that the short term results are phenomenal (easier shifting, decreased noise, etc.), the gearboxes all seemed to fail (pinion bearing) after making the switch. I have not determined nor am I saying that these failures were caused by these products, but the coincidence is rather unsettling to me.
After having read this on Townsend's site, I can't help but feel a little superstitous. Honestly, I really don't know what to believe. I can tell you that my current vehicle ('88 spg) has a recent rebuild in it with 10w30, and I intend on keeping it that way. Also, it's worth noting that some of the later OG 900's had owner's manuals that omitted topics regarding the changing of gearbox oil. Things that make you go hmm....
