I wasn't thinking properly. Yes, the bushings are easier to get to with the AC compressor and waterpump pulley removed. They are still hard to get at though. I only replaced them this summer because I had the engine out of the car for a transmission replacement. I recall needing a impact wrench to loosen the lower alt bushing bolt. That said, the alternator pulley tensioner arm bushing is easy to get at when doing the watermpump. Its also cheap.
My understanding though is that the alternator itself will (almost) never fail. I believe it is designed so that the voltage regulator, a $40 plastic piece that screws onto the oil-filter side, is the only thing that wears out. Unfortuantely doing the water pump doesn't make getting at the voltage regulator any easier.
